4.11.20 LOL LPL/LCK Slate

We definitely had a bit more excitement during this split. Between BLG and VG, the LPL saw some very interesting and unexpected games. Even Damwon Gaming in the LCK took a game against DragonX, and T1 lost 0-2 to KT. There’s definitely a lot to be said in these matchups, but we’ll dig deeper into that during our rewind podcast, so stay tuned. As for today, things are looking a bit uncertain, so let’s dive in.

LGD enters this series riding high, having defeated RNG 2-0. OMG have had some decent victories lately, although they were expected to take down SN and Vici. It will be interesting to see if LGD can carry their momentum forward and take down their next big challenger.

One thing LGD has going for them here: despite the difference in overall ranking this season, LGD’s players are all fairly matched with OMG’s roster. Peanut and Yuuki were two of LGD’s strongest points during their matchup with RNG, and have made a big impact in their victories. Meanwhile, Kramer and killua spent their latest series racking up an insane amount of assists. Since Kramer has had a consistently good kda throughout the past few weeks, he could be a very beneficial pick even if he doesn’t get all the kills. Still, OMG are the favorites going into this, and they could put an end to LGD’s chances. If OMG’s rotations are on point tomorrow, it could very well spell the end for LGD. H4cker’s Lee Sin is deadly, although chances are it’ll be banned, so he likely won’t be worth the pick. However, if they create enough space for icon and SmLz, OMG could crush LGD’s chances.   \

APK may not be the strongest team out there, but they have taken games when most counted them out. Their recent loss to GenG resulted in a 1-2, and they even managed to take down KT last week. Now, against HLE, they will look to take their first victory since KT. Their loss to Griffin was a bit surprising, but it’s likely they weren’t too prepared for that matchup seeing as Griffin was one of the lower ranking teams in the LCK. HLE’s recent series against AF resulted in a 2-0 (this was before their break) and was brought about by Tempt’s Zoe. Given how much of a mess AF was last week, HLE might have a hard time replicating that strategy against a more prepared team.

Tempt65.4%2.58.7

As mentioned above, Tempt was a big part of HLE’s victory over AF. This enabled both him and Vsta to get some decent kills while the remainder of the team racked up some nice assists. This might be hard to replicate, however. Their record hasn’t been very smooth aside from the AF series, and players like Ikssu, Flawless, and Cover are sure to give them a harder time. As far as kills go, it’s important to note we have seen some very heavy assists in the LCK and even the LPL recently. Every game has more assists usually, but over the past few slates kills have gone down in both regions (with a few exceptions. Looking at you Haro) and supporting characters have gotten a crazy amount of assists. If this keeps up, picking a top or jungler for their assist score will be even more important, and it could start to leak into the two carry lanes, mid and adc, as well. We’ll keep a close eye on this trend and begin developing an up-to-date strategy as the split moves forward… but more on that in a future announcement.

WE just came back strong after a small break, taking down Top Esports 2-1. Meanwhile, eStar has suffered defeat after defeat, playing surprisingly poorly. Normally eStar scores high when they win, making for a great lineup, but man have they been falling flat recently. Still, they may pull a WE and AF on us by winning their first series in a few weeks.

When they’ve played well, Cryin and Wink have been the two players with kills, which raises some interesting questions. There’s been a slight shift recently, with junglers and mid overshadowing their adcs in a number of games, so maybe this has something to do with eStar’s recent lack of success. Still, if eStar manages to get things under control this series, it could be a disaster for WE. If not, Morgan could be a decent top pick, with beishang and Teacherma to follow up.

After RNG’s latest defeat to LGD, they are definitely looking a bit scary at the moment. Given the highlight of their former winning streak was against eStar, a team that has been crumpling recently, it wasn’t necessarily as much of an upset as some have made it out to be. That being said, RNG were still considered the favorites, and rightly so. Yet LGD made short work of them, leaving the rest of us wondering how RNG will recover.

When you look at RW’s lineup, the first player to stand out should be Haro. In his last series, he ended up going 15/3/5 on Elise (we’ve mentioned it before, but hey, now we know what this man is capable of.) The odds of him repeating that aren’t exactly high, especially with the way LoL can work. After all, some champions can do a lot of damage while others secure the last hits; this is another tease of what we will be examining in future projects. But for this particular case, it would be difficult to argue Haro had little contribution to his team’s win in that game despite his KDA. So, moving forward, don’t expect a 15/3/5 every game, but Haro is definitely capable. RNG”s Langx hasn’t exactly shown up lately, but it would be interesting to see what he can do if RNG pulls themselves together. Still, Crazy/Haro could be dangerous, and besides, if RNG does well, Betty/Ming will be their strengths as the game progresses.

SB’s 3 recent victories have been against some relatively weaker teams: Griffin, AF, and HLE. Seeing as KT managed to stand up to T1, their chances of winning have gone up dramatically. Both team’s low kill and death scores should be noted, although keep in mind KT managed to have 6 kills on kurO in Game 1 and 7 on Aiming in Game 2 against T1. SB don’t pose the same threat, leaving these players more room to shine on the scoreboard. That being said.. T1 looked like a hot mess at times, so maybe SB is in a bit more control.

Matchups like these can be a bit sketchy at times. kurO and Aiming were definitely the stars in terms of kills, and are likely to be again, but as we’ve mentioned above, the assist game is very strong. This is going to be more prevalent in LCK, and since KT doesn’t normally perform as well in the kill department, you might want to save some crucial spots for other matchups. If you do choose to believe in KT, however, Aiming can get extremely fed if KT are able to keep SB under control. Players like Summit, Punch, and Dove won’t exactly get destroyed, so that bot lane focus for KT will pay off in the end. In fact, Punch could make a big difference in that early game, although he will have quite a bit of work to do.
