Thursday Opening Day 07.23.20

Major League Baseball is back! We get a 2 game appetizer here before the main event on Friday. Millions of dollars are being dished out all over the place this weekend and DK is even doing risk free tournaments to try to lure their customers back. This is a great opportunity to win big, but you have to understand the risks associated with slates like this as well. Our only recent data is in exhibition games that are too few and too abnormal to put too much stock into them. Another thing to keep in mind is that some starters are not stretched out all the way so we need to try to steer clear of the wrong plays in the pitching minefield. We are thrilled for baseball to be back and hope you all are as well. Good luck and game on!

Fanduel and Draftkings both offer great MLB contests and the biggest difference between the sites involves pitching. On Fanduel, you only need 1 starter whereas you need to pick 2 on Draftkings. On small slates, it’s best to pick the aces on each site but when you get to larger slates, an ace and a value pitcher can be a great combo on DK to afford solid hitting as well. Stacking is important for DFS baseball so be sure to try to pair your top guys with other players around them in the lineup.

Yankees(-139) V Nationals(+129) 7:05 PM EST

PitcherDK $FD $ERAWHIPL wOBAR wOBA
Gerrit Cole$10,000$11,4002.500.89.249.243
Max Scherzer$8,600$10,7002.921.03.321.223

Gerrit Cole should be fully stretched out for this start, tossing 87 pitches in his last try. He was nothing short of phenomenal last year and his numbers across the board are menacing for this Nationals lineup. His good form in exhibition play and the Nationals’ poor track record against Cole makes him stand out as a top pitching option. Juan Soto has had a solid summer and is a viable flier, albeit in a tough matchup.

Scherzer also happened to throw 87 pitches in his last appearance so he should be good to go for a full workload. The difference here is he did not look good at all in that appearance but he claimed that he wanted to work through some trouble and get all his pitches feeling good. We should expect the usual Scherzer V the world demeanor from the ace here against a tough lineup. The Yankees are right heavy and Judge has had an electric performance in summer league so far, nobody else is sticking out.

Giants(+250) V Dodgers(-300) 7:10 EST

PitcherDK $FD $ERAWHIPL wOBAR wOBA
Johnny Cueto$5,000$6,6005.061.25.446.228
Clayton Kershaw$7,700$10,3003.031.04.270.284

Johnny Cueto did not look good last year coming off of Tommy John surgery and his atrocious numbers against lefties are of particular importance against the lefty heavy Dodgers. He is the unanimous pitcher to pick on for this slate and literally every Dodgers bat can be playable, with a focus on Bellinger, Justin Turner, and Corey Seager. The latter 2 have looked particularly strong in summer league action and Max Muncy and Joc Pederson are top candidates as well.

Clayton Kershaw has been fire on opening day in his career and against the Giants as well. Only a few bats in the lineup have gotten to him and 2 of them (Longoria and Pence) are battling injuries. With Brandon Belt also sidelined and Posey opting out, this lineup has little firepower. He threw 73 pitches in his last intrasquad game so he should be good to go as long as he pitches well. Alex Dickerson has been playing well recently and Wilmer Flores has been able to hit Kershaw in the past.
